De-escalation is a skill that is used everywhere, all the time: on the street, in the ED, sometimes with patients experiencing crises, or even with patients upset about wait times or parking. Many students receive little training on de-escalation. How do we talk to patients who are agitated or clearly altered in some way? Are there ways to talk patients into a better headspace without resorting to restraints, involuntary medication, or police presence (which can be traumatizing!)? This teach-in aims to help students get comfortable with some ways to talk to patients who may need de-escalation, in order to partner with patients, preserve their dignity, and find solutions that work for everyone.
